Turkey – Iran for backpackers

After reading a couple of guidebooks (rough guides are particularly good for independent travellers) and asking around for tips, and considering that I’ve approximately one month to get to Iran, here goes my generic idea about where to go and what to do in Turkey (avoiding the Syrian border):

  1. Instambul/culture and shopping
  2. Selcuk/Ephesus ruins
  3. Fethiye/Oludeniz beaches and valleys
  4. Antalya/Chimaera flames/Aspendos ruins
  5. Konya/Sufism, architecture and butterflies
  6. Goreme/Capadoccia rock formations
  7. Kahta/Mount Nemrut
  8. Trabzon/Sumela monastery/Kackar mountains
  9. Erzurum/Palandoken sky resort
  10. Kars/Ani citadel
  11. Dogubayazit/Isha Pasha Palace/Mount Ararat
  12. Van/lake and mountains

And of course meet as many people as possible, try all the dishes on the menu and consume local music, dance, theatre, cinema, literature and all other art forms!
